Abstract

This paper examined the importance of security in Nigerian tertiary institutions. The paper is a position paper. Secondary data were used in the paper. The secondary data were collected from print and online publications. The paper concluded that adequate security in Nigerian tertiary institutions will ensure; preservation of modern infrastructure facilities, smooth implementation of curriculum, and improvement in academic staff job performance, improvement in students’ academic performance stable academic calendar and attraction of international students and academic, Safe and secure, campus environment and stronger partnerships and collaborations between the university and the community. Based on this findings, the paper suggests that the Federal, States and local government should address factors responsible for insecurities in the Nigerian states and the federation by creating a conducive and friendly environment to ensure peace and security. Tertiary institutions should provide all resources that will guarantee a peaceful and secured learning environment by employing adequate security officers and provide adequate modern security facilities in the various institutions. Stakeholders in the tertiary institutions should come out with programme to support and promote peace and security in the tertiary institutions.
